suggestions of best tours

I'm planning about 17 days in Scotland in September 2014, We plan to use Edinburgh as home base with 2 days in Glasgow to see Charles Renne Macintosh architecture. I'd like to not be using the same roads over again. My ideas included 2 1 day tours.the Loch Lomand/Stirling tour and the St Andrews tour for the sea shore. Then the 4 day tour to Skye and the 3 day Lake District and Hadrians wall tour. We'll be flying in from NYC. We won't rent a car. What do you think? Am I missing some really great places? We're 70 years young, but this realistically will be our only trip to Scotland. We've been park rangers in the Sonoran Desert and are used to being active . Lush Scotland will be a treat. Any great suggestions are welcome. |

What you've outlined will give you a good mix of things, although you will repeat some roads slightly between the Loch Lomand 1-day tour and the 4-day trip to Skye. You might want to think about the 5-day Highland Explorer (which includes about 2 days on Skye) as an alternative to the 4-day Skye and 1-day Loch Lomand. |

Thank you for the advice.....we're looking into tying some 4 and 5 day trips together. I'm happy for any input. |

Rabbies offers several combinations of trips on their site; as long as the dates work, they are pretty accomodating about grouping trips together. The first two trips I took with Rabbies were the Orkneys tour, which will give you a great introduction to the Highlands before going over to the Orkneys, then brings you back through Ullapool and some of the most breathtaking scenery in Scotland. I paired that with the Outer Hebrides tour - different types of islands than the Orkneys, and it also takes you to Skye. You could potentially pair either of those with the Highland Explorer, or the Iona-Mull- and Skye trip, both of which are also alot of fun. |

Can Rabbies pick you up from Edinburgh for some of their 5 to 10 day trips and drop you off in Glasgow? Or is it pretty easy to take the train from Edinburgh to Glasgow. Is it worthwhile to purchase "Explorer Passes" or the "Great British Heritage Pass?" We've decided on this coming June for the trip. Is Scotland bothered by black flies like the Northern parts of the US. They are nasty fellows! Again, thanks for your advice, I appreciate it. |

Nancy - it depends on the trip, since not all trips will route conviently through Glasgow to Edinburgh. The folks at Rabbies will need to weigh in on that when you book your trip. That being said, Rabbies drop you off at Waverly Train station in Edinburgh, where you can get a train back to Queen Street station in Glasgow. Trains leave hourly and it takes about 40 minutes. A one-way ticket is about 10 pounds sterling (I think - that might be the round-trip fare). No black flies! |

Thank you Susan. We're thinking of the 10 day Outer Hebrides tour and 3 days in Edinburgh before the rabbie's trip and 3 days in Glasgow at the end. We'll try to find a hotel near the Queen St station. Thanks about the good news of no black flies! :) You were a positive influence on our choice. |

The Millenium hotel is right next to Queen Street station at St. Georges Square - nice hotel, fairly reasonable. If that's booked, there are other hotels a few streets away. Hope you have a great time! You'll definitely get great scenery and I have never met a Rabbies guide that wasn't a pleasure to travel with. |

Does the 10 day tour out of Edinburgh leave every Friday? I think the last day in May 2014 might be good. Do you have a better selection of accommodations the earlier you sign on? Scotland sounds fabulous! |
