Scottish Highlights 12 Day Tour

Hello, I am considering this tour in the spring and would love to hear from those of you who have been on it. I will most likely be traveling alone (waiting to hear back from friends). My concerns are the following:
1. I don't mind being on a bus, but how frequent are the stops and for about how long? 2. Is there quite a bit of "driving by" wonderful sights to see? 3. B&B accomodations? How are they? Are they all within walking distance for meals? 4. Single suppliment costs: what are they for B&B's? and are the single rooms tiny or would it better for me to book a double? 5. I love to hike and walk...will there be times allowed for this?
I guess that's it. Thank you for any and all input and help, I narrowed my trip down to 3 companies/tours (all quite different) and am just trying to tie up any loose ends before booking. Regards, Lisa |

Hi Lisa, I just did the 12 day tour by myself and loved it. I booked through a travel agent which was prob a bit more expensive as they paid for all my B&B's but everyone else paid per visit which I believe was pretty cheap. Not sure of an estimate price. I think next time I would do this. Every B&B was different but they were a good size. You dont spend much time there. The stops are frequent for either toilet, coffee etc and sites. Its a pretty relaxed tour which is great usually apart from a few days kick off at 8.30 - 9 am and finishing for the day at 5 - 6 pm. The bus rides are not that long as its not a very big place which is good. All my B&B's were in town and close to meals. I know a few of the guys were a bit further out but they got lifts in to town. This was rare and at peak time. As for walking thats what I enjoyed the most, I usually raced off to see as much as I could, most of the trip was organised around this. The first part of mine was a whiskey tour in Islay which I had know idea about but I enjoyed it so if you don't like whiskey ask to go on a separate trip at the start. Hope this helps I would be using them again if I went back the tour guides are fantastic. I had 3 different ones. Lane |

Lane, Thanks for all the great information! I will probably book directly through the site and pay per b&b. I took a small group tour through Ireland last summer with another adventure tour company and had a great time! I love all the hiking we did and experiencing all the off the track places as well as the famous ones. I just hate paying for the single suppliment (usually travel once a year with friends but no one has money for next year) Again, thanks and if you remember anything else, let me know. Regards, Lisa |

This is a GREAT company, I too did my research and this one came up as the best, in terms of what I needed and the reviews. and then my personal experience on the 5 day tour -Highland Explorer Tour with Ross as our amazing Guide on the tour FANTASTIC!! 1. I don't mind being on a bus, but how frequent are the stops and for about how long? plenty of stops throughout the day - small bus - 16 people - perfect 2. Is there quite a bit of "driving by" wonderful sights to see? - a good balance of driving to the far out places, with amazing sights to behold and absob 3. B&B accomodations? How are they? Are they all within walking distance for meals? really great b&B and the Tour guide will drop you there each eve and pick you up the next morning, and usually the others stay in close proximity and the guide will recomm restaurants etc, and you will most definitely bump into someone from the tour, or you may go with someone.... 4. Single suppliment costs: what are they for B&B's? and are the single rooms tiny or would it better for me to book a double? the single rooms are fine - I was alone and my rooms were very livable....you can always call Rabbies for more info about this... 5. I love to hike and walk...will there be times allowed for this?- we were on a 5 day tour - and we did a spot of it... RABBIES TOURS!!!!!!!!!!!! <3 Cannot wait for my next tour!! Love you RABBIES |

Lisa - as you can see by looking over the website, Rabbies gets a fair number of single travelers, all of whom rave about the company and the tour experience and many of whom come back to Rabbies again and again. Their tours offer a variety of experiences, from castles and prehistoric monuments to nature spots. The guides will tend to tailor the trips based on the people on each tour - if there are folks that want more photos stops, they'll cater to that; if most of the folks on the bus want to get out and walk/hike, they'll cater to that as well. Depending on the day's itinerary (sometimes you need to make a ferry and timing is a bit more rigid), the longest stretch on the bus at any one time has been around 2 hours. Not all B&Bs charge single supplements; I've travelled with Rabbies a lot at this point and my B&Bs have run anywhere between 30 and 50 pounds per night, with the average cost being 40-45 pounds. Rabbies also allows you to book your own B&Bs, if you chose to do so, so if you want more control on pricing, that's an option. I hope that you ultimately do choose to book with Rabbies - they are a wonderful company that cares passionately about Scotland, does good things for the environment, and clearly cares about making sure their customers have great experiences on their tours. It's why we all keep coming back! |
